Well it looks like I’ll be spending a lot of time flitting between Calgary and Victoria due to working in Calgary and renovating the place in Victoria. YAY! I love getting to see friends in two cities I love!
On my most recent visit back to Victoria, 5th Street Bar and Grill was high on my list of restaurants to visit. When I fist moved to Victoria, I lived very close to it on Hillside and would visit all the time. It attracts customers with the excellent menu organized by price ($5.55, $10, $15, and $20). I can honestly say I have never had a bad experience here. Drinks too are excellent, whether they’re a concoction mixed up by 5th Street or a beer on tap (can we talk about how thrilled I am whenever Phillips Chocolate Porter is on tap?).
There are drink specials everyday ($4.00 for a beer), which makes 5th Street an excellent choice for students. When I was working on my B.Ed. we would hit up 5th Street basically every single Friday for a weekly debrief, which was never too hard on the wallet. One week we went and it was the restaurant’s “birthday”. To celebrate, they hosted a free buffet of appetizers and pizzas and sleeves of free beer. I think we were there for a solid 5 hours and spent about $10 each; that’s how great they are to their customers.
I’ve eaten basically everything on the menu, as have my friends. For appetizers, the Flatbread is the best, as are both the Squash Soup and the Chicken Corn Chowder. Of the burgers, the Buffalo Burger reigns supreme among the majority of my friends and family, but the Tuna Burger is my favourite. Also good is the Turkey Burger. As for pizzas, the Portobello is the best. Their pizzas are among the best in the city, but avoid the Mediterranean, which is slightly boring. Also great on the menu: Seared Brie, Almond Chicken Salad, and Coconut Prawns.
When it comes to drinks, if you’re not a vegetarian (sidenote: if you ARE a vegetarian this is among the least veg friendly restaurants in Vic, and if you’re vegan, you’re shit outta luck) you need to try a Caesar. It comes with a chicken wing on the side, so you can get a heavy drink and an appy. Perfect! Also good for their own mixed drinks is the 5th Street.
Overall, go to 5th Street. It’s among the best restaurants in the city. You can sit on the restaurant side if you’re just looking for a casual dinner or you’re with family, or the bar side if you’re looking to be a bit rowdier and/or are planning to hit up the town after (students, the 4 passes right outside to take you downtown).
